Council tip closed due to blaze
Falkirk Council has closed the Roughmute tip near Denny after a large fire broke out in an 18ft-deep pit used to store waste.

The blaze, which started at about 1600 BST on Sunday, was finally extinguished at 1100 BST on Monday.

The B883, which runs past the site, was closed to traffic on Sunday and Monday morning due to drifting black smoke.

A spokesperson for the local authority said no-one was injured in the incident.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) said it would be conducting an investigation.

Black smoke

More than 35 firefighters from Central Scotland Fire and Rescue Service attended at the incident.

A spokesman for the brigade said it was not yet clear how the fire started.

He said: "When we arrived hundreds of tonnes of waste material was well alight. There was substantial damage to the building and thick black smoke was escaping as a result.

"Early indications are that the fire was started accidentally."

The site is used to process general household waste, wood and cardboard.
