The council said it was taking other action to tackle shortages |
Hundreds of council tenants across Perthshire have had the right to buy their homes suspended for five years because of a housing shortage. The move, which has been approved by Scottish ministers, will affect 300 current tenants in greater Perth and Highland Perthshire.
A further 300 new tenants expected over the next few years will also be denied the right to buy.
Perth and Kinross Council said a longer term action plan was being drawn up.
The two affected areas have seen much of the housing sold off and have suffered from a low turnover of rented properties.
Private land
Council housing convener Gordon Hunter, said: "Many councillors, while accepting right to buy exists and why so many people took advantage of it, want to consider the Scottish Executive's assessment of its impact."
Tenancies which commenced on or after the 30 September 2002 will be affected by the suspension.
The local authority said it was trying to acquire more sites for affordable housing, including acquiring land from private owners, and speed up the sales process.
Perth and Kinross Council is the seventh authority to have been granted a suspension, after East Renfrewshire, Highland, South Ayrshire, Moray, Fife and Dumfries and Galloway.
