Councils in joint funding request
Stirling and Clackmannanshire councils are set to ask ministers for funding to investigate radical proposals for merging frontline services.

Details of the request came as it emerged that the regime, if agreed, would come into force after the local government elections in May 2007.

The authorities have outlined a request of 125,000 from the Scottish Executive for a detailed feasibility study.

Its findings would be reported to the council in March 2007.

The authorities are planning to merge services such as education and social work in a cost cutting exercise which could immediately save 4m.

About 50 managerial jobs could be lost in the move and compulsory redundancies have not been ruled out.
