Work has started to lay the track on a �70m rail line to take more freight off roads and boost business opportunities. The Stirling-Alloa-Kincardine track will also see passenger services introduced between Stirling and Alloa for the first time since 1968.
The project will reopen about 21km of abandoned railway lines between Stirling and Longannet Power station.
The track, due for completion by summer 2007, will also take freight trains off the Forth Rail Bridge.
The railway line, one of the first major projects undertaken after Scottish devolution, also aims to provide a more efficient freight route for coal from Ayrshire to the power station.
Transport Minister Tavish Scott said: "This is one of the most important infrastructure projects Scotland has seen in decades."
