Move to cut homeless young people

The project aims to prevent the risk of homelessness among the young
A new project which aims to cut homelessness among young people in the Falkirk area has been launched.

The move came following concerns that some youngsters needed to be more aware of what they can face when deciding to move out of the family home.

A resource pack has been developed to be used with third and fourth year pupils in schools.

It provides information on money, housing, legal rights and dealing with difficult situations.

'Future options'

Falkirk Council housing convener Pat McCafferty said the decision to move out was an important one.

He added: "Many young people are simply unaware of what support exists, but the teaching pack fully explains what they should consider before making a final choice."

"It isn't a decision to be taken lightly but hopefully by educating them as to the potential pitfalls, they will be in a far better position to make an informed choice over their future housing options."

It is expected that the pack will be used as part of the personal and social education curriculum and rolled out across all secondary schools in the autumn.
