Concern over underage movie sales
18-rated films
Traders were urged to be more careful over age restricted films
Most video shops in Clackmannanshire and Stirling were prepared to sell 18-rated videos and DVDs to underage buyers, an undercover operation found.

A total of 86% of shops were ready to sell age-restricted productions to a 16-year-old trained volunteer.

Trading Standards officials have expressed their disappointment at the results of the operation.

They said many young people now carried acceptable identification and shop assistants should ask to see it.

Staff in just one of the shops visited asked for ID and in one other the volunteer was asked their age.

'Further surveys'

Stirling Council Trading Standards manager Hugh Hamilton said: "We are disappointed with this result.

"But it may be because shop staff treat the sale of tobacco, fireworks, lottery tickets and alcohol more seriously, they don't give as much thought to other products in this category, such as DVDs, videos, spray paint, lighter refills and crossbows."

He added: "We will be carrying out further surveys over the year and we urge traders to be more careful."

Officers put some of the sales down to the "carelessness" of individual shop workers, saying they had paid lip service to procedures put in place by their employer to prevent underage sales.
