All schools in the Scottish Borders are to remain shut until Monday after heavy snowfalls hit the region.

A meeting of the council's emergency planning team decided that all 74 sites should be kept closed.

Pupils were due to return on Tuesday but now the new term will not begin until next week at the earliest.

Neighbouring Dumfries and Galloway Council reported more than 50 of its 121 schools would remain shut on Thursday due to the bad weather.

Scottish Borders Council decided at the weekend to delay the return of its pupils due to forecasts of heavy snow.

Subsequent bad weather has led to those closures being extended for the rest of the week.

In Dumfries and Galloway it was originally intended that some schools would go back on Tuesday but a decision was later taken to shut all sites for a day.

A small number were able to reopen on Wednesday.

The majority were set to return on Thursday but still more than 50 were due to remain closed.

Parents have been advised to check the authority's website for the latest situation.
