Union fears more quilt job cuts

A staff mass meeting is due to be held at Slumberdown early next week

Union leaders have voiced fears a second round of job cuts could be set to hit a Borders quilt-making factory.

Slumberdown in Hawick shed more than 30 posts earlier this year and there are concerns another 16 jobs could go.

A staff mass meeting is due to take place on Monday to discuss company plans to restructure, which could lead to redundancies and reduced wages.

In a letter to workers, the company has outlined moves it hopes will help the factory survive the economic downturn.

Tony Trench, regional representative of the Unite union which represents the majority of the 95-strong workforce, said it would fight any plans to axe jobs.

The company has denied the Hawick plant will be closed and production moved to Northumberland or abroad.
