Jobs lost in kilt company closure

The kilt maker is the latest of a number of Borders firms to make cuts

A kilt company in the Scottish Borders is to close with the loss of 31 jobs.

The current economic downturn and a shortage in orders have been blamed for the move at Jedburgh Kiltmakers.

It is the latest in a string of job cuts to affect the knitwear and textile industry in the area. Last week, Hawick Knitwear said it was cutting 32 staff.

Tory MSP for the area, John Lamont, described the announcement as a "huge blow" for the town. Jedburgh councillor Len Wyse said it was devastating news.

'Great sympathy'

Mr Lamont said he had been shocked by the "sudden nature" of the latest announcement.

He added: "This was clearly a very difficult decision for the management who have been struggling in the recession.

"My first thoughts are with the workers who are to lose their jobs and for their families."

Mr Wyse said he had "great sympathy" for a workforce which had a reputation of being very hardworking.

"I know this decision is certainly not a reflection on their efforts and I hope everything possible will be done to help the staff through this difficult time," he said.
