Police have warned the public about opportunist conmen trying to benefit from Lloyds TSB's takeover of HBOS.

Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary has had several reports of people receiving phone calls claiming to come from Bank of Scotland representatives.

The callers mention the deal with Lloyds TSB and then seek to obtain personal banking details.

Police have advised anyone receiving such a call to hang up and contact their bank during working hours.

Lloyds TSB unveiled the terms of its �12.2bn takeover of Britain's biggest mortgage lender after the HBOS share price plunged.

The fraud phone calls started soon after rumours of the deal began to circulate on Wednesday.

Police have urged people not to be duped into giving out account details.

A statement said: "Please remember that legitimate bank callers will not ask for PIN or other passwords.

"If any calls are received and you are not sure if the caller is genuine, hang up and contact your bank during working hours."
