Supporters hope to bring some kind of football team back to Gretna |
An action group is seeking public support to set up a new football team in Gretna after the demise of the town's Scottish Football League side. Gretna FC resigned from the SFL earlier this month after going into administration in March. Fans of the club hope they can find the backing to create a team to play at a lower level of the sport. An open meeting is to take place in the town's community centre to gauge the amount of support for the plan. Action group secretary Anton Hodge said they had drawn on the experience of other areas which had suffered similar problems. "We have spoken to some of the other clubs in the UK who have gone through this in recent years," he said. Those sides include Scarborough and Halifax Town. Non-league set-up "We have also started looking at the finances of putting together a new club at a much lower level," he said. "It is more likely to be playing in one of the non-league set-ups. "We are looking at the finances of that and seeing how feasible it is." The meeting is scheduled to take place at the town's Richard Greenhow Centre on Wednesday evening. "Anyone who has any interest in Gretna please come along and give us your ideas and offer your help if you are in a position to do that," said Mr Hodge.
