The number of drug finds in Dumfries prison has risen sharply

The number of drug finds in Dumfries prison has risen by more than 50% in the past five years.

A total of 34 seizures were made in the south west Scotland jail last year compared with 22 in 2003.

The figures emerged in an answer to a parliamentary question by Scottish Tory leader Annabel Goldie.

The Scottish Prison Service has attributed the rise in the number of drug finds nationally to the success of its improved security measures.

Last year, nearly 1,800 seizures were made across the country's 18 prison establishments.

It compares with 862 such finds in 2003.

Miss Goldie called for "robust measures" to be taken against anyone caught supplying drugs in prison.

The Conservatives have also suggested the creation of drug-free wings in jails.

However, an SPS spokesman said that had been tried in the past without success.

"We are much more in favour of integrated treatment care which allows prisoners to get social skills and specialist addiction services," he said.
