Bid to find flood defence funding
Whitesands
Flooding has been an issue on the Whitesands for many years
Efforts are to be made to identify funding to carry out design works for a multi-million pound project to improve flood defences in Dumfries.

The council needs to find 250,000 from its own budgets towards the process for the town's Whitesands.

Environment committee members want the issue to be made a priority.

The cash would support the development of plans based on the construction of an embankment and extending flood planes north of the town.

Local authorities can apply to the Scottish Government for a grant to cover up to 80% of the construction costs of a flood prevention project.

Visual impact

However, the estimated 250,000 needed to prepare the Whitesands scheme will initially have to come from what is known as the council's development block.

It is used to finance key projects - but can take years to access.

Director for planning, housing and environment Peter Bulmer is hopeful the design works can be made a priority.

Councillors said it was vital progress was made on the scheme, but added that it was important the public saw the visual impact of the plans.
