Parents can be warned about absences via mobile phone |
A text message system alerting parents to absence and truancy is to be rolled out across Borders schools. The messages will be sent out automatically from school offices within 45 minutes if a child has not turned up for class.
As well as text messages, the automated system can also send out warnings by telephone or e-mail.
The alert service was introduced to Scotland after the murder of Livingston schoolboy Rory Blackhall in 2005.
He was abducted on his way to school and there was criticism of delays in reporting his absence.
The Scottish Executive funded trials of alert systems at dozens of other schools across the country last year.
Now Scottish Borders Council has decided to adopt the scheme.
It will also use the system for sending out messages about parents' evenings and school closures because of bad weather.
