Borders textile plea made to M&S
M&S store in Edinburgh
The Borders MSPs want M&S to source clothing in the region
A plea has been made to Marks and Spencer to source clothing from the Borders as it prepares to open a store in the region later in the year.

Lib Dem MSPs Euan Robson and Jeremy Purvis have written to firm's chief executive Stuart Rose to make the case.

Mr Robson said the move could help reduce the company's carbon emissions and ensure the quality of its products.

Marks and Spencer recently announced a five-year 200m plan to make the company carbon neutral.

Real boost

Mr Purvis said this could be tied into using textiles from the Scottish Borders.

"Clearly if the company did decide to market textiles products from the Borders, this would be a huge boost to an industry that has seen a great many difficulties over the last few years," he said.

The politicians have invited by Mr Rose to visit the region and meet their Scottish party leader, Enterprise Minister Nicol Stephen.
