A one-way system will be trialled in Hawick for a year |
Hawick High Street could soon have a one-way traffic system after councillors agreed to a pilot scheme. The one-year experiment will involve vehicles only being allowed to travel towards Tower Knowe.
The move follows complaints about the multi-million pound Streetscape scheme, introduced three years ago.
Residents and councillors claim the project has been unsuccessful as it has failed to stop through-traffic going along the High Street.
Councillor Mary Beck, from the Teviot and Liddesdale area committee, told BBC Radio Scotland: "Streetscape hasn't really done what it set out to do - to create a free-flow of traffic and lose the bottlenecks in the street.
"It just hasn't worked."
Ms Beck said lorries that are not stopping in the High Street will be diverted onto the A7, Commercial Road.
She said: "From a previous public meeting, 50% were in favour of a one-way system."
However, she said councillors were concerned about the possibility of nearby terraces becoming "rat runs".
The councillor said traffic in the terraces would be monitored before the introduction of the temporary scheme.
"We need to re-educate motorists to use Commercial Road better and more efficiently," she added.
