A number of air weapon incidents have been reported recently |
Dumfries and Galloway police have issued a warning about the dangers of air guns after a string of attacks. In recent incidents people have been hit in the face and body by ball bearings from BB guns while animals have been struck by other air weapons.
The police are asking the public to consider the risks when buying such items for their children.
They warn the weapons can cause serious injury and even simply carrying them can prove frightening to the public.
Dumfries Divisional Commander Supt Kate Thomson asked parents of teenagers in particular to be aware of the problem.
'Serious injury'
"Children may not realise the injuries they can cause by using these guns," she said.
"Even carrying these items around the streets can be frightening to other people who may contact the police as a consequence."
Recent incidents involving BB guns have included people being hit in the face and body by ball bearings and injuries to animals caused by the use of other air weapons.
"BB guns and other air weapons are not toys," said Supt Thomson.
"They are guns which can cause serious injury.
"Ultimately people who cause injury and danger to others by reckless use of these weapons can expect to be reported to the procurator fiscal or children's reporter."
