Clubbers in Dumfries can expect to be scanned for weapons
Police in Dumfries are issuing hand-held metal detectors to nightclubs in the town to scan people for weapons.

The force has teamed up with the local MOBS (Make Our Bars Safer) scheme to introduce the safety plan.

The detectors will be used by door staff to search customers for knives or other weapons before they are allowed into the premises.

The scanners were issued to police as part of the Safer Scotland violence reduction strategy.

A Dumfries and Galloway police spokesman said it seemed to be the best use of the detectors.

"We are fortunate that we do not have the same problems with knife crime as other areas of the country but that does not mean we are complacent," said Sgt David Burns.

I would like to remind people that carrying knives is a serious offence and urge them to report anyone they know is indulging in such dangerous behaviour
Sgt David Burns

"The hand-held metal detectors were given to us as part of the Safer Scotland violence reduction strategy and we wanted them put to good use.

"This initiative is aimed at creating a fear-free atmosphere for clubbers in the town.

"We hope that the detectors will make people think twice about carrying knives on nights out."

Sgt Burns said the force was committed to working with partner organisations to respond to issues of concern like knife crime.

"Public support is also very important," he added.

"I would like to remind people that carrying knives is a serious offence and urge them to report anyone they know is indulging in such dangerous behaviour."
