Mrs Wright collapsed within a mile of Borders General Hospital |
An investigation is under way into claims emergency call centre staff took more than five minutes to determine the location of a dying woman. Naomi Wright collapsed at Melrose Parish Church Hall just a mile from Borders General Hospital.
Friends battled to save her as 999 operators said the hall's address - Weirhill - was not on their maps.
An ambulance service spokesman said investigations had started into the confusion surrounding the location.
Mrs Wright collapsed during a country dance night at Melrose Parish Church Hall on 31 May.
Friends, including trained nurses, tried to revive her as others telephoned for help.
They were told by the emergency call centre that Weirhill was not on their maps.
Target times
It took about five minutes of explanation before an ambulance was despatched, it is claimed.
Targets for ambulance response times in medium populated areas say that 50% should arrive within eight minutes, rising to 95% within 18 minutes.
The paramedics did not arrive in Melrose until 24 minutes after the emergency call was made at 1953 BST.
The nearest available ambulance was in Kelso, 15 miles away.
A spokesman for the Scottish Ambulance Service said investigations into the confusion surrounding the location were under way.
He also explained ambulances are only occasionally stationed at Borders General Hospital, near Melrose.
Mrs Wright was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
