Refuse collection costs tackled
Wheelie bin
Bags which are not in wheelie bins will not be collected
Dumfries and Galloway council is to stop picking up bags of rubbish left beside wheelie bins to help cut its refuse collection costs.

The move is part of a wide range of measures to try to reduce a budget deficit heading towards 700,000.

The council estimates more than 7,000 homes put out "side waste" which refuse collectors currently take away.

Coloured bin bags are being considered which homeowners would have to pay for and would be the only ones lifted.

The authority says it will fully inform householders before introducing the policy.

It is also looking at charging for bulky goods collection, reducing rubbish dropped by school children and harmonising service levels across the region.
