A dispersal order has been granted in the grounds of St Michael's |
Dispersal orders have been granted to police to protect St Andrew's and St Michael's churches in Dumfries. The orders come into force on 30 April and give powers to disperse groups of more than two people behaving in an anti-social manner around the churches.
They will operate between 1900 and 0700 and anyone who refuses to leave or who returns can be arrested and prosecuted.
A police spokesman said the action was being taken after a number of complaints about vandalism.
"The decision was not taken lightly and was only reached when other options did not work," said Sergeant Graham Kerr.
"Churches are community spaces that people should feel free to visit but the actions of a minority are damaging the buildings and surrounding area.
"The dispersal orders give police the tools they need to tackle the irresponsible and unacceptable behaviour of the small number of people causing the problems."
