Discarded drug needle action plan
Riverside walk
A large number of needles have been found on riverside walks
A pilot scheme has been proposed to reduce the number of discarded drugs needles on a Dumfries riverbank.

The plan would see "sharps boxes" introduced at either end of the Nith riverside walk near College Street.

A report has shown that more than 350 needles were found by community wardens in the town last year - a third of them in that specific area.

The news comes despite the region having one of the most successful needle exchange schemes in the country.

The vandal proof boxes would be put at either end of the walk and could be used for drug needles.

Funding through the local community safety partnership has been secured to target "hot spots" where problems have been identified.

The project will be evaluated in six months time and if it proves successful could be extended to other parts of the town.
