Snow-hit road uses convoy system

Snow ploughs are being used to keep the A9 clear

A convoy system is being used to guide motorists through a part of the Highlands which has been hit by drifting snow.

The A9 between Kingussie and Blair Atholl, Perthshire, had to be closed for a period in the early hours due to the severe weather.

However, snow ploughs are now clearing the road which has reopened.

Northern Constabulary have urged drivers to be patient as journey times will be increased.

Other A and B roads have been affected by the heavy overnight snow falls and by 0600 GMT a number had been closed, including:

• The A939 between Grantown and Nairn
• The A940 from Dava to Forres
• The B9007 between Carrbridge and Ferness
• The A889 between Dalwhinnie and Laggan
• The A894 between Skiag Bridge and Newton Junction
• On Skye, an unclassified road between Staffin and Uig
• And on Wester Ross, an unclassified road between Kishorn and Applecross

A statement from Northern Constabulary said: "Overnight the Badenoch area was particularly affected by drifting snow and many minor roads will still have deep drifts.

"Police are asking that motorists only travel in this particular area if necessary."
