The council hopes to boost the number of women members |
The Mountaineering Council of Scotland is to outline to members plans to boost female membership and help a Scots climber to Olympic glory. The MCofS has set out a series of goals in its strategic plan for 2009-13. It will present the aims at meetings in Inverness, Perth, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen next month. Other targets include encouraging more children to try climbing walls to help stay healthy and increasing hill walking among adults. By 2013, the council hopes to increase the number of people regularly going out hill walking from 5% of the adult population to 6%. Also, it wants to raise the number of female MCofS members from 25% to 35% of its total membership. Other targets include setting up eight new children's climbing clubs at climbing wall venues and giving 50,000 children the chance to tackle climbing walls at their schools. A key goal is to help a Scottish athlete through coaching and training support to win a medal at the Olympic Games. The first ever Olympic sport climbing competition will be held in 2020. The regional meetings will be held from 9-25 June, starting in Inverness and ending in Aberdeen.
