Broadband claims raised with MEPs

ConCom has seen broadband rolled out across the isles

Islanders' claims that a publicly funded rollout of a wireless broadband service was unreliable have been raised in the European Parliament in Brussels.

Connected Communities (ConCom), which has been installed across the Western Isles, met with opposition in Northbay on Barra.

Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) said last year that following an evaluation, ConCom was the best option.

MEPs said they would write to the Scottish Government about the concerns.

Barra postman Neil MacNeil, who has been campaigning against ConCom, told members of the parliament's petitions committee that the service relied on transmission masts and this means of connecting to broadband was not suited to hilly Barra.

Last October, Rhenigidale a remote village on Harris became the latest to get broadband access through ConCom 19 years after it was first connected to the main road.

The scheme is funded by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and HIE.
