Council to pursue school closures

A plan to close junior secondary schools on the Western Isles will be pursued in 2011, the local authority has confirmed.

A meeting was called by councillors to discuss the financial and political implications of the proposal.

Nineteen members of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar demanded the talks after learning it would cost an unbudgeted 6m to try and keep them open.

The closures are deemed necessary for financial and policy reasons.
