A former Labour MSP for the Western Isles has been appointed chairman of the Gaelic Media Service (GMS). Alasdair Morrison's appointment, which was announced by Ofcom, has been approved by the Secretary of State for Scotland, Des Browne. Mr Morrison will help head up MG ALBA, the new operating name for (GMS). The BBC Trust gave its go-ahead in January for BBC Scotland and GMS to launch the new service, which includes television, radio and online services. Mr Morrison said: "I am looking forward to working constructively with my fellow board members, our partners the BBC, and everyone across the industry to ensure that Gaelic broadcasting services are of a standard appropriate for this age."
