Thousands sign up to A82 petition

The A82
The A82 runs from Glasgow to Inverness

A petition on the Scottish Parliament website demanding an upgrade of the A82 road has collected 8,555 names.

The route from Glasgow to Inverness - which takes in the Caledonian Canal, Glencoe and Loch Lomond - is a well known accident black spot.

Local authorities, road users and police have joined forces to back the campaign for improvements.

The e-petition has more than doubled the highest number of names submitted to Holyrood over a single issue.

It is now closed to submissions.

The previous best - a 4,187-name petition - concerned the Aberdeen bypass.

Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson is due to meet representatives of the campaign early next month.
