The wind farm is proposed for Barvas Moor on Lewis

Lewis Wind Power's plan for 176 turbines for a site on the Western Isles is being considered by the Scottish Government.

Jim Mather - speaking to interviewer Lesley Riddoch on BBC Radio Scotland - said a decision was due "very shortly".

He said this would happen without a referendum being held first.

Isles SNP MSP Alasdair Allan had previously called for a poll of local opinion on the plan for Barvas Moor, Lewis.

Final decision

Mr Mather said: "I think we have consulted widely and heard local opinion loud and clear."

Asked when a decision would be made he said: "Before the end of this month I'd imagine."

Last February, councillors on Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council) voted by 18 to eight to support the �500m project.

The comhairle's backing was given on condition that five turbines were removed from the 181 LWP proposed.
