A community buy-out of a landmark hotel is being mooted in an effort to revitalise John O' Groats.

John Green, of the area's promotions group, said the John O' Groats House Hotel has been gradually deteriorating.

He said a buy-out similar to those used to take control of large estates was the subject of discussions locally.

The hotel's owners, Heritage GB, declined to be interviewed by BBC Scotland but did say public investment would be needed to make improvements.

The company also runs attractions 874 miles away at Land's End.

It has been reported that visitors spend on average just 10 minutes at John O' Groats, but would stay longer if there was more to see and do.

Mr Green said John O'Groats has "great potential" but the area needed major public and private investment.

On the hotel, he said: "This building has been gradually deteriorating over a number of years. This is the worst example of deterioration that has taken place."

He added: "The community here has had some discussions with local enterprise officials and we are open to trying to affect a community buy-out."
