Unmanned solution to fuel problem
Pay at pump fuel at filling station
Self-service pumps are offered by major chains and supermarkets
Unmanned 24-hour self-service fuel pumps have been suggested as one way of halting the decline of small rural filling stations in the Highlands.

Outwith supermarket forecourts, just one rural station - Scourie in Sutherland - offers the service.

A Highland Council report has ruled out deploying mobile fuel pumps on health and safety grounds.

Officials have proposed working with Highlands and Islands Enterprise in studying issues facing rural stations.

They have also recommended that councillors give the go-ahead for an investigation into the local authority purchasing its fuel from local stations.

The council spends 5m a year on staff and councillors' travel costs.
