A council employee plans to cycle and then canoe to work as part of an effort to encourage people to give up their car for a day. Organisers of Inverness initiative AlternativeNess said a teacher also intends to make an 80-mile (128km) round trip from home to school.
Others will be encouraged to consider more environmentally-friendly forms of transport on 19 September.
The project is also behind an offer of the free loan of cycles to commuters.
Trophies will be awarded to the school and business that come up with most innovative forms of travel.
Jim McCreath, of Inverness and Nairn Transport Forum, said: "We've heard from lots of organisations with innovative ideas of how to encourage pupils, teachers and staff to travel to school or work without cars.
"At the moment one of the front runners has to be Smithton Primary School whose plans feature P5 teacher Colin Hutt who's cycling the 80-mile round trip to school from his home in Grantown-on-Spey."
Mr McCreath added: "We also have an intrepid Highland Council employee who is cycling from Inverfarigaig to Lochend then canoeing the rest of the way into town."
