Scotland's gymnastics governing body has been told it will receive £350,000 of investment as it prepares for Gymfest Inverness.

Agency sportscotland, which announced the funding, said it will go towards coaching and supporting athletes.

It will also see the appointment of three full-time coaches - a first for the sport in Scotland.

More than 1,000 gymnasts aged between five and 40-years-old are expected in Inverness over the weekend.

'Significant investment'

The event will include a range of disciplines and involves schools, dance troupes and clubs.

The sport is proving so popular in Scotland that a recent report estimated that more than 100,000 people are regular participants, said sportscotland.

It is also estimated 3,500 youngsters are on waiting lists to join gymnastic clubs across the country.

Julia Bracewell, chairwoman of sportscotland, said: "The appointment of three full-time coaches is a huge step forward for the governing body and is a tremendous boost to the sport."

Mike Roberts, chief executive officer at Scottish Gymnastics, added: "Scottish Gymnastics is delighted to have received this significant investment which will help support the growing demand for gymnastics in Scotland."
