Islanders on Eigg took over from an absent landlord
Hebridean islanders are celebrating the 10th anniversary of their ambitious community buyout.

The Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust took control from absent landlord, German artist Maruma, in 1997.

Residents are now on the verge of having a 24-hour electricity for the first time with construction under way on a "green" power scheme.

The anniversary will be celebrated on Eigg, 10 miles off the mainland, with a party.

Trust secretary Maggie Fyffe said that since the buyout the community had renovated five run-down houses and there have been discussions on building new properties.

John Booth, another trust member, said excitement was mounting at the prospect of a 24-hour power supply.

At the moment islanders rely on generators for electricity.

Mr Booth said the project costs run to 1.5m. He added: "The scheme uses a mix of renewables - wind, water and solar power - and it should be up and running by the end of the year."

He said there had been a 100% take-up of the offer of ready available power.
