A pair of white-tailed sea eagle chicks have died after their nest slipped and fell 9m (30ft). The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) Scotland said the day-old eaglets were killed in the plunge or died from hypothermia on Mull.
The chicks' parents have previously featured on the BBC 's Springwatch wildlife series.
However, the society said that generally Scotland's sea eagle population was in good health.
It said a bird found dead on Lewis after reaching the age of 23 was an indicator of this.
The eagle was one of a group of young Norwegian sea eagles released in Scotland in 1984 as part of the original reintroduction programme.
The raptors were wiped out in Scotland in the early 1900s but have been making a comeback, with most found on Mull and Skye.
