There were few people at Inverness railway station |
Inverness railway station was almost deserted at lunch-time as a strike by signal workers led to the cancellation of all services in the Highlands. The electronic arrivals and departures board carried a notice about the strike instead of the usual train information.
First ScotRail said trains would not be running from mid-morning on Wednesday to mid-afternoon on Friday.
The routes affected are from Inverness to Aberdeen, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Wick, Thurso and Kyle of Lochalsh.
Bus firms offering alternative public transport said it would not be until later on Wednesday or Thursday afternoon before the impact of the strike on their services will be known.
Extra seats
However, Stagecoach said it had vehicles on standby in Inverness and had put extra seats on local services in the Highlands.
Extra capacity was also provided on its Aberdeen to Inverness service.
Inverness bus station said it been busier than usual and had assisted travellers, with rail tickets for Edinburgh-Newcastle and Leeds, to get seats on coaches to help them to their destinations.
