Calum Macdonald, 24, was also fined �650 for other offences and banned from driving for 18 months when he appeared at Stornoway Sheriff Court.

The case was heard as the BBC's Panorama programme revealed that NHS Scotland has spent �3m dealing with violence and abusive patients.

The court was told how Macdonald, from Barvas, Lewis, crashed on Saturday.

He required seven stitches in his head after his Ford Focus collided with a street light, road sign and a fence in Stornoway.

Police took him to the accident and emergency department at Western Isles Hospital where he was abusive to the people who tried to help him.

The accused shouted and swore at a nurse and obstructed her as she tried to treat his injuries.

Procurator fiscal David Teale said: "What should have taken half an hour took two-and-a-half hours."

Breath sample

Macdonald promised to pay for the damage and apologised to the nurse and hospital staff for his behaviour.

He pleaded guilty to driving without due care or attention, refusing to give a breath sample and for assaulting and hindering the nurse.

A plea of not guilty to assaulting a doctor was accepted.
