Wind cuts power and shuts schools

Thousands of homes have lost electricity supplies as high winds batter the Highlands and Islands and Argyll and Bute.

Scottish Hydro said more than 4,000 customers have lost supply - in the isles several hundred are cut off.

Severe weather also closed schools and playgroups in the Western Isles and forced ferry cancellations.

Police and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council) have warned of extremely high winds and high water.

There has been heavy rain affecting other parts of the Highlands and snow falling on higher ground.

All schools and playgroups on Barra were closed on Thursday as well as others on Eriskay, South Uist, Benbecula and North Uist.
