Orange tip butterflies may be seen on the wing again in August
A survey of a brightly coloured butterfly has had a "phenomenal" response from the public, according to the group that organised the count.

So far 1,000 post cards recording orange tip sightings have been sent to Butterfly Conservation Scotland.

Tom Prescott, Highlands and Islands project officer, said there was still time for people to send their reports.

Orange tips emerged during unseasonably warm weather in April. They may be seen on the wing again in August.

Mr Prescott said the response to the orange tip survey had been "phenomenal" and asked people - particularly in the Highlands - to report sightings of other butterflies.

Few records

He said: "Last year, butterflies were seen right up to October because of the nice weather.

"We have hardly any records of butterflies in the Highlands and people can send us reports of any butterfly, even if they think they are common."

Observations can be sent in writing to: Butterfly Conservation Scotland, Balallan House, 24 Allan Park, Stirling, FK8 2QG.
