Northern police noticed a rise in the drink-driving figures |
Northern Constabulary stopped 19 people for drink-driving during the third week of a festive safety campaign. During the same period in 2005, a total of 12 people were stopped for the same offence.
One drug-driver was also detected in the area, making a total of four since the force's campaign started three weeks ago.
The public reported 12 of the drink-drivers, while the rest were detected by police on patrol.
There were eight collisions involving drink during week three of the campaign, including one which involved injury.
Insp John Smith of Northern Constabulary's road policing section said: "I think it is very significant that many of the drink-drivers were reported by members of the public.
"It shows that people's patience has run out and they are no longer willing to stand by and watch others put lives at risk."
He added: "There are still too many people who are choosing to ignore the warnings in relation to drink and drug-driving.
"We will continue to pro-actively police the roads and detect as many people as possible for this dangerous and selfish act.
"We would also like to thank the public of the Highlands and Islands for their support and would urge people to continue to come forward with information in relation to drink or drug-drivers."
