Northern Constabulary and Highland Council have released a list of areas affected by flooding. Further bad weather is forecast for overnight, with rain and winds reaching 80mph.
Thirty schools in the Highlands were closed on Thursday and several will stay shut on Friday.
Ferry sailings between Ullapool and Stornoway have been disrupted. Bad weather is forecast overnight for Caithness, Sutherland and Orkney.
The worst affected roads at 2200 BST were:
B9101 - Foynfield to Auldearn road is closed
A939 - snow gates closed on the Grantown on Spey to Forres road due to falling trees and a high possibility of a landslide at Huntly's Cave
A87 - closed to high-sided vehicles at the Skye Bridge
Burn Place, Dingwall - closed, as is the Dingwall to Strathpeffer road
B9165 - Garricoch Junction to Loandhu closed
A836 - Dornoch Bridge to Edderton road is passable but affected by surface water and tree debris
Fendom Road - passable with care, although there is up to 10in of water at Pitgoarty
B9176 - Struy road closed
B817 - Alness to Evanton road closed at Balnacraggan and near the Novar Estates office
Old Evanton Road - closed
A862 - Ardullie to Dingwall road is closed
A9 - closed overnight at the Embo junction by the Loch Fleet to Golspie road
A949 - Clashmore to Bonar Bridge road is closed overnight
A9 - Golspie to Brora at Dunrobin (north) is closed
A9 - Golspie at Drumuie (south) is closed
A837 - Invershin to Rosehall road is closed
A873 - closed at Strathnaver
A897 - Helmsdale to Melvich road is closed
A836 - Altnaharra to Tongue road is closed
A9 - closed at Strathsteven
A876 - Castletown to Bower road is closed
A836 - Castletown to Dunnet road is closed.
Drivers were being advised not to travel in the Orkney Islands due to extensive flooding. The roads closed included Graineshore Road, Junction Road and Pickaquoy Road in Kirkwall; the A965 Kirkwall to Stromness road at Saverock and Tormiston; the A960 Kirkwall to Kirkwall Airport road; the A964 Kirkwall to Orphir Road at Kirbister; and the B9047 at Millhouse, Hoy.
