 The Gruffalo is a well-known children's book |
A Gaelic version of the popular children's book The Gruffalo is helping to mark a national book reading day in the Highlands. Two hundred copies of An Gruffalo will be handed out to Gaelic-speaking three-year-olds by Highland Council.
The National Bookstart Day project was made possible with funding from Gaelic organisation Bord na Gaidhlig.
The Gaelic version of the book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler became available a year-and-a-half ago.
It has been published in the language by Acair in the Western Isles.
National Bookstart Day - 6 October - is a scheme aimed at encouraging parents and young children to enjoy books.
Pupils from Central Primary School's Gaelic Medium pre-school class visited Inverness Library to receive their Bookstart Treasure Box packs.
Bord na Gaidhlig chief executive Allan Campbell said the language lends itself to the telling of the children's story.
He added: "It is important that we make learning through Gaelic as much of a fun experience as possible to encourage and motivate our young people, and to strengthen their bond with the language."
