Councillors approve course revamp
Askernish Golf Club sign
The plan is to restore the course to its former glory
Western Isles Council has granted planning permission for the regeneration of a golf course designed by legendary player Old Tom Morris.

It is proposed to restore the Askernish course on South Uist to its original 1892 lay out.

Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) had expressed concerns for wildlife but these are thought to have been allayed.

However, several crofters said the development would see them losing out on grazing rights.

Councillors granted planning permission at a meeting on Thursday.

Following a visit to Askernish by experts last December, a plan was devised to restore the nine-hole links course to 18 holes.

Old Tom won The Open championship four times - a feat matched by his son Young Tom Morris.

He is also regarded as possibly the greatest course designer - helping to design 60 courses worldwide.
