Two further phases of the Centre for Health Sciences in Inverness have secured planning approval.

The main building of the complex in the city's Raigmore area is due to be completed this autumn.

Phase two is for a NHS dental practice, research laboratory and office space for public and private agencies.

The third phase, which will begin in 2008, incorporates what the centre's backers have described as a flagship diabetes institute.

The project represents Highlands and Islands Enterprises (HIE) biggest investment yet in Inverness.

It also involves the University of Stirling, the NHS and the University of the Highlands and Islands Millennium Institute.

The second phase will start later this year and includes an 18-staff NHS dental practice, while the third phase will bring the total cost of the building to 23m.

A 327-space car park and an access road from the city's Old Perth Road was also given the go-ahead by the council's planning committee.
