Camcal were involved in the Beatrice offshore wind farm project |
The operator of a renewable energy yard in the Western Isles has laid off 50 of its 90 workers. Camcal, which builds towers for wind farms and wave machines at Arnish, made the announcement on Wednesday evening.
Operations director Phillip MacPherson said it was hoped a company buy-out could save the firm.
Mr MacPherson added talks had been taking place with "a couple" of potential investors and hinted a deal may be struck in the next few weeks.
The company has been struggling with financial difficulties.
Remains busy
Camcal won a contract to provide Ocean Power Delivery with 12 segments for Pelamis wave energy machines last year.
They were installed off the northern coast of Portugal to generate 2.25 megawatts - enough for 1,500 households.
It was also contracted to work on towers for oil and gas company Talisman's offshore wind farm project, which is about to get under way near the Beatrice platform in the Moray Firth.
Both contracts have been completed and following the finish of the Talisman job, Camcal let go a number of Polish workers.
The yard remains busy with three projects.
It is providing 16 towers for a wind farm project in Holland, a large tower for a turbine in Germany and three for an Isle of Lewis project.
The work is due to be completed in September.
