Wild salmon numbers in west Highland rivers are increasing thanks to a unique agreement between anglers and fish farmers, it has been claimed. The different camps have been at loggerheads over claims parasites from caged fish affect those in the wild.
Fort William farmers now tailor lice treatment and keep some cages fallow.
This has seen a huge increase in fish returning to rivers such as the River Lochy where rod catches went up from 35 in 1998 to almost 1,300 last year.
Salmon farmers said it was in their interest to ensure the highest quality of environment for both farmed and wild fish.
They are co-ordinating their treatment of fish for sea lice and keeping cages fallow during times of the year when juvenile wild fish are heading from rivers to the sea.
Since the project, anglers have reported the rise in salmon and trout numbers.
