 The solar filament on the Sun's surface |
Amateur astronomers have named a phenomenon on the surface of the Sun Nessie because they believe it looks like the Loch Ness Monster. The solar filament - created by magnetic loops which trap cool dense gas - resembles the neck and humps of the beast.
Pictures of it have appeared on the New Scientist's website.
They were taken by Gary Palmer from Los Angeles but astronomers from the Isle of Skye have also sent in Sun shots.
The New Scientist said other filaments have appeared in the shapes of jellyfish, an eel and a spaceship.
