Organisers have said that 10,500 women completed the Ignis Asset Management Woman's 10k in Glasgow's Bellahouston Park on Sunday.

Runners in the road race - the largest women-only 10k in Britain - raised over £1m for charities and were supported by 15,000 spectators.

The race was won by Linet Masai, of Kenya, in 31 mins 30 secs.

The first Scot home was Hayley Haining, 37, from Dumfries who came fifth 2 mins 1 sec behind the winner.

In second place was Hilda Kibet in 32 mins 30 secs and in third place another Kenyan, Grace Momanyi in 32 mins 34 secs.

Gavin Stewart, chief executive of Ignis Asset Management said: "We have been sponsoring this race for over 12 years and during that period we've seen a tremendous increase in the number of participants and the money raised for charity.

"It's a great event with a fantastic atmosphere and I'd like to congratulate all of the women who ran today."

Bailie Liz Cameron, the Chair of Culture and Sport Glasgow, said: "Today has been a wonderful day, providing many with memories I know they will treasure for a lifetime.

"Millions have been raised for so many deserving charities over the years and this year has been absolutely no exception.

"It all adds up to a unique event that the city is rightly proud of."

Lord Provost Bob Winter added: "Mass participation events like the Women's 10k provide the ideal focal point and motivation for people to get involved, making sport an integral part of their daily lifestyle.

"With a London 2012 Olympic Games and Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games on the horizon, it is great to see so many people taking up the challenge of one of Scotland's biggest running event."

During and after the race runners drank about 16,000 litres of water and munched their way through 12,000 bananas.
