Downturn prompts college interest

In total, 5,805 people applied to the college, compared with 3,597 in 2008

The recession has resulted in an "exceptionally high" number of applicants to a Glasgow college, its vice principal has said.

The number of people applying to start courses at Cardonald College has jumped by 61%, compared with the 2008 figures.

Eleanor Harris said this year there had also been a 154% rise in applications from people in the 25-34 age group.

University admission figures released last month showed applications rose by 5.4%, and by 15% over the age of 25.

Ms Harris, vice principal of Cardonald College, said: "Our courses have always proved popular, however, our application numbers are exceptionally high for 2009-2010 in comparison with previous years.

"Some of this will be linked to the downturn in the economy and we are seeing many 25 to 34 year olds applying to re-enter education to develop new skills.

"As of this week, we have received over 5,805 applications - this is up from 3,597 this time last year."

'Creative industries'

The college said creative courses, such as Fashion Design, were in high demand - with that particular course having to close its doors to applicants after receiving 280 applications for 49 places.

The college's Portfolio Preparation course, which helps students get a place at art school, has already had 300 applicants.

But Ms Harris said: "Our increases aren't just seen in the creative industries, as our Fitness, Health and Exercise course has seen a 74% increase in applications to date also.

"Our new Hairdressing and Beauty courses have already jointly received over 100 applications - and this is after only three weeks on the college website."

Statistics published last month by the university admissions body Ucas showed the increase in student applications was not only confined to colleges.

There was a 5.3% jump in applications from Scottish students of every age in 2009, but this rose to 15% among the over 25s.
