A man from Glasgow has drowned while swimming off the coast of Venezuela.

Colin Love, 23, died on Thursday while on holiday in the South American country.

His family in Scotland have been informed and it is understood that his mother is flying to Venezuela to identify the body.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: "We can confirm the death of a British national swimming off the coast of Venezuela."

She added: "Next of kin have been informed and consular assistance has been provided."

Friends of the retail shop worker, understood to live in the Maryhill area, posted their condolences on social networking sites.

On his Bebo page, Mr Love said of himself: "I'm decent, loyal, approachable and like to live for the moment. I have lots of energy to burn."

He described himself as a keen swimmer and someone who liked to keep fit at the gym or running each day.

The profiles list him as having last logged in just two days before his death.

One online tribute read: "Everyone is pretty much still in shock. He was a truly nice lad."
